Supreme Court of India.

In an unprecedented move, the Supreme Court of India has published the asset declarations of its sitting judges. The details were uploaded to the court’s official website this week. The step aims to improve transparency and accountability in the judiciary.

As of Monday, 21 out of 33 judges have filed their disclosures. The list includes Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna and the next three most senior judges. The court said the remaining declarations would be published once received.

CJI Khanna has ₹55.75 lakh in bank deposits and ₹1.06 crore in a Public Provident Fund (PPF). He owns a two-bedroom DDA flat in South Delhi and a four-bedroom flat in the Commonwealth Games Village.

Justice BR Gavai, set to become CJI on 14 May, holds ₹19.63 lakh in bank accounts and ₹6.59 lakh in PPF. He owns two flats—one in Maharashtra and another in Delhi—and has inherited a home in Amravati. His liabilities stand at ₹1.3 crore.

Justice Surya Kant has fixed deposits of over ₹6 crore. He owns residential properties in Chandigarh, Gurugram and Delhi.

Justice AS Oka, who retires on 24 May, has ₹92.35 lakh in PPF and ₹21.76 lakh in fixed deposits. He owns a 2022 Maruti car and has declared a loan of ₹5.1 lakh.

Justice Vikram Nath has investments worth ₹1.5 crore. He owns property in Noida and a bungalow in Prayagraj.

Justice KV Viswanathan, elevated to the bench in May 2023, has declared investments worth ₹120.96 crore. He has paid ₹91.47 crore in income tax between 2010 and 2025.

Justice Bela M Trivedi owns two homes in Ahmedabad and jewellery valued at ₹50 lakh.

This decision follows a full court meeting held on 1 April. All judges unanimously agreed to make their financial details public. Earlier, such disclosures were submitted confidentially to the CJI.

The move follows controversy around alleged unaccounted cash found at the official residence of Justice Yashwant Varma, now under internal inquiry.

The new rule will also apply to all future appointees to the Supreme Court. High Court judges submit asset declarations to their Chief Justices, though public disclosure remains rare.
