Congress leader Rahul Gandhi asserted on Tuesday that if the INDIA alliance assumes power, it will enshrine legal guarantees for Minimum Support Price (MSP), highlighting the need to address the demands of protesting farmers.
Speaking at a public rally during his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh, Gandhi criticised the Central government's handling of the farmers' agitation and pledged support for their cause.
Gandhi also hinted at incorporating the recommendations of the Swaminathan Committee, including MSP assurances, in the alliance's election manifesto.
He condemned the use of tear gas against farmers protesting at border points and criticised the government for failing to implement Swaminathan's suggestions despite honouring him with the Bharat Ratna.
The ongoing 'Delhi Chalo' agitation, led by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, has underscored the pressing need for MSP guarantees and agricultural reforms. Gandhi emphasised the alliance's commitment to address these issues and champion the rights of farmers and labourers.
Furthermore, Gandhi lambasted the government's economic policies, citing GST and demonetization as detrimental to small traders and businesses.
He stressed the importance of local manufacturing and job creation, accusing the government of favouring big corporations over small-scale entrepreneurs.
Additionally, Gandhi reiterated his call for a caste census, arguing that it would provide crucial insights into the country's social and economic landscape. He highlighted the marginalised status of Dalits, backward classes, and tribals, advocating for their increased representation and participation in various sectors.
The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, which commenced in Odisha and entered Chhattisgarh on February 8, continues to mobilise support for social justice and economic empowerment across the region.
