The 16th edition of the joint military exercise ‘Nomadic Elephant’ between the Indian and Mongolian armies is set to begin in Meghalaya's Umroi from July 3 to July 16. The Indian Army announced that this exercise aims to enhance interoperability between the two forces, particularly in semi-conventional operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrains.
The Additional Directorate General of Public Information, IHQ of MoD (Army) shared on X that the exercise is conducted under the UN mandate, focusing on improving the capabilities of both armies in handling operations in challenging terrains.
This annual training event alternates between Mongolia and India, with the 15th edition having been held in Mongolia’s Ulaanbaatar. The previous exercise saw participation from the Mongolian Armed Forces Unit 084 and the Indian Army's Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment.
In May, the 12th Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting between the Defence Ministries of India and Mongolia was held in Ulaanbaatar. The meeting, which took place on May 16-17, reviewed progress on various bilateral defence cooperation initiatives and explored ways to further enhance cooperation between the two nations.
The meeting was co-chaired by Joint Secretary (International Cooperation) of the Ministry of Defence Amitabh Prasad and Brigadier General Gankhuyag Davagdorj, State Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Mongolia. India's Ambassador to Mongolia, Atul Malhari Gotsurve, also attended the meeting.
During the JWG, both sides expressed satisfaction with the ongoing defence cooperation and discussed the current geopolitical situation. Joint Secretary Amitabh Prasad emphasised the potential of India's defence industry and its capacity for fruitful partnerships with the Mongolian Armed Forces.
The Mongolian representatives acknowledged the growing ties and expressed confidence in the capabilities of the Indian defence industry.
Exercise ‘Nomadic Elephant’ is a testament to the strong and evolving military relationship between India and Mongolia. It not only strengthens the operational readiness of both armies but also enhances their ability to work together in diverse and challenging environments. The continued success of this exercise underscores the commitment of both nations to maintaining peace and stability in the region while fostering a deep and enduring partnership.
