To reinforce security along the India-Bangladesh border, the West Bengal government has allocated 142.79 acres of land to the Border Security Force (BSF) for the construction of border infrastructure, including outposts and barbed-wire fencing.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the development through a post on his official ‘X’ handle, outlining the details of land allocation across multiple border districts. The initiative is expected to accelerate the establishment of Border Outposts (BOPs) and strengthen surveillance mechanisms to curb infiltration and smuggling activities.

According to the Chief Minister, land distribution has been carried out across several districts: 22.925 acres in Cooch Behar, 35.165 acres in Jalpaiguri, 8.815 acres in Darjeeling, 2.84 acres in North Dinajpur, and 20.1701 acres in South Dinajpur.

Additionally, 10.90 acres have been allocated in Malda, 38.805 acres in Murshidabad, 0.55 acres in Nadia, and 2.6 acres in North 24 Parganas.

For years, land acquisition for border fencing in these regions had been hindered by procedural complexities and resistance from local residents. However, recent directives from Nabanna, the state secretariat, instructed district administrations to expedite the identification and transfer of land in the interest of national security.

Officials indicate that enhanced coordination between the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the state government played a crucial role in fast-tracking the process. The BSF has confirmed that infrastructure development work on the allocated land will commence shortly.

Observers view the move as a proactive step toward tightening border security, particularly in vulnerable districts such as Malda, Murshidabad, and North and South 24 Parganas, where porous stretches of the international border have remained a longstanding concern.

With the new infrastructure in place, the BSF is expected to significantly enhance its operational capacity and surveillance capabilities along the frontier.
