Amit Shah to seek extension of President’s rule in Manipur from Parliament today.

Members of the INDIA bloc will stage a protest inside the Parliament complex on Wednesday morning, opposing the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.

The protest is scheduled to begin at 10.30 am at Makkar Dwar inside Parliament.

Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha’s List of Business for Wednesday confirms that Union Home Minister Amit Shah will move a resolution seeking Parliament’s approval to extend President’s rule in Manipur for another six months.

President’s rule was first imposed in Manipur on 13 February, shortly after Chief Minister N Biren Singh stepped down amid escalating ethnic violence and prolonged political instability.

The motion moved by Amit Shah will extend the President’s rule until 13 February, 2026, if cleared by Parliament. “SHRI AMIT SHAH to move the following resolution:- ‘That this House approves the continuance in force of the Proclamation, dated the 13th February, 2025 in respect of Manipur, issued under article 356 of the Constitution by the President, for a further period of six months with effect from 13th August, 2025,’” the official Lok Sabha statement reads.

On 25 July, Amit Shah had already submitted a statutory resolution for this extension, which was admitted by the Rajya Sabha. The Rajya Sabha Parliamentary Bulletin confirmed, “That this House approves the continuance in force of the Proclamation dated February 13, 2025, in respect of Manipur, issued under article 356 of the Constitution by the President, for a further period of six months with effect from August 13, 2025.”

In February, President Droupadi Murmu imposed President’s rule in the violence-hit state after receiving a detailed report from the Governor of Manipur, following months of unrest and governance challenges that led to Singh’s resignation.

Alongside Amit Shah’s motion, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal will move the ‘Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024’.

The proposed legislation aims to update India’s maritime laws, aligning them with the country’s international obligations under various treaties and instruments.

The bill also seeks to support the development of Indian shipping and ensure efficient management of the mercantile marine to protect national interests.

Additionally, Lok Sabha MP PP Chaudhary and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will move a motion recommending that the Rajya Sabha appoint one of its members to the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the One Nation One Election initiative, filling the vacancy left by the retirement of P. Wilson.

The motion reads, “SHRI P. P. CHAUDHARY SMT. PRIYANKA GANDHI VADRA to move the following:- ‘That this House do recommend to Rajya Sabha that Rajya Sabha do appoint one Member of Rajya Sabha to the Joint Committee on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 in the vacancy caused by the retirement of Shri P. Wilson from Rajya Sabha and communicate to this House the name of the Member so appointed by Rajya Sabha to the Joint Committee.’
