A former Supreme Court Judge B Sudershan Reddy and the INDIA alliance's nominee for Vice-President, officially filed his nomination papers on Thursday. The nomination was submitted in the presence of several high-profile leaders from the opposition alliance.
Among the prominent figures at the filing were Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge; Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi; and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi. Other key leaders from the alliance who were present included Sharad Pawar, chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar); Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav; DMK MP Tiruchi Siva; and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Sanjay Raut.
Before filing his nomination, Reddy spoke to reporters, expressing his hope for support from across the political spectrum. The Election Commission has announced that the polling for the Vice-Presidential election will take place on September 9, with the counting of votes scheduled for the same day. The deadline for filing nominations was August 21, and candidates have until August 25 to withdraw their nominations.

The Vice-Presidential post became vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21, which was the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. He cited health reasons for his resignation.
The election for the Vice-President is conducted by an electoral college comprising members of both Houses of Parliament (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha). The procedures for these elections are governed by Articles 64 and 68 of the Constitution, as well as the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952. According to Article 66(1) of the Constitution, the election is held using the system of proportional representation with a single transferable vote, and voting is by secret ballot.
