The IMD has raised a warning after a series of erratic weather conditions has hit the nation, characterised by unpredictable spells of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, hailstorms, and heat waves. Forecasters have warned that heavy rains would continue to lash Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and the eastern region, whereas North India may be witnessing intense thunderstorms accompanied by hail. In Delhi and its surrounding areas, wind velocities of up to 60 kmph could cause disruption in power supply, damage to buildings, and delays in transportation.
As the southern and northeastern parts prepare for rains, the states of Rajasthan and Gujarat are currently combating another problem of dust storms and localised heat waves, which will continue till at least May 12. The northern highlands, such as Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, have received a harsh forecast, where rains, snow, and hailstorms can be expected.
Across the plains, a broad belt covering Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, and Odisha is set to experience strong thunderstorms with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph between May 11 and 14. Even as the mercury rises in central India, coastal regions and the interior of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are unlikely to find much relief, as they too prepare for isolated heavy rainfall and lightning strikes.
The IMD has specifically highlighted the risks for those in West Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, where hot and humid conditions will make for an uncomfortable week. Meanwhile, mariners and coastal residents near Sri Lanka have been advised to exercise caution on May 12, as rough seas and high winds are forecast to batter the coastline.
