Chhattisgarh sends first fortified rice shipment abroad.

India has exported its first consignment of Fortified Rice Kernel (FRK) from Chhattisgarh to Costa Rica, marking a significant step in promoting global nutrition and strengthening agri-trade ties, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry announced on Tuesday.

The shipment, comprising 12 metric tonnes of FRK, was facilitated under the leadership of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

The initiative underscores India’s technological advancement in food fortification and its growing commitment to addressing global food security and nutrition challenges.

“The first consignment of 12 MT of Fortified Rice Kernel from Chhattisgarh has been exported to Costa Rica. In continuation of PM Narendra Modi ji’s efforts to fight malnutrition, this effort at the global level not only strengthens our foreign trade but also our nutrition mission,” Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said in a post on social media platform X.

He added that the export initiative will open new markets and boost opportunities for farmers, millers, and exporters. “It also provides our farmers, millers, and exporters with newer markets, better price realisation, and greater promotion for value-added agri exports,” Goyal said.

According to the Ministry, Chhattisgarh has been making consistent efforts to promote the export of rice and fortified rice products, helping local producers gain international recognition.

“The successful export of FRK to Costa Rica highlights Chhattisgarh’s growing role in the global supply chain for nutrition-enriched food products,” the statement said.

The Ministry further noted that the development positions India as a dependable supplier of nutritious and high-quality food products in global markets. Abhishek Dev, Chairman of APEDA, commended the exporters and stakeholders involved in the achievement.

“The export of fortified rice from India not only strengthens the nation’s agri-export portfolio but also reaffirms its commitment to addressing malnutrition through science-based and globally recognised food solutions,” he said.

Fortified Rice Kernel is produced by blending rice flour with essential micronutrients such as iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12.

The fortified mix is extruded and moulded to resemble rice grains, which are later combined with regular rice in a specific proportion to improve its nutritional content.

The successful export of FRK from Chhattisgarh to Costa Rica not only symbolises India’s growing strength in agri-food innovation but also highlights its leadership in promoting global nutrition through sustainable and science-driven practices.
