India has extended financial assistance worth USD 250,000 to Dominica for the implementation of five community development projects under its Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) initiative, aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and promoting grassroots development in the Caribbean nation.

The Government of India and the Commonwealth of Dominica signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) for these projects, marking another milestone in their longstanding partnership.

The exchange of documents took place between the High Commissioner of India to Dominica, Pradeep Rajpurohit, and Dominica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business, Trade and Energy, Vince Henderson, in the capital, Roseau.

According to officials, the QIPs will focus on infrastructure improvements and community upliftment in rural and semi-urban areas. The projects include the rehabilitation of 235 metres of a farm access and feeder road in Macaton, Grand Bay; the rehabilitation of St. Elmo’s Road in St. Elmo’s Estate, Upper Giraudel; and the rehabilitation of portions of a farm access road in Carholme. Additionally, they include the rehabilitation of the Grand Bay Basketball Court and the construction of a footpath crossing at Fond St. Jean.

In a statement, the High Commission of India in Trinidad and Tobago, which is concurrently accredited to Dominica, said that “India remains steadfast in its endeavour to extend developmental assistance to the people of the Commonwealth of Dominica and extends best wishes to them on the occasion of the 47th anniversary of the independence of the country.”

India and Dominica have maintained warm and cordial diplomatic relations since the establishment of formal ties in 1981. Over the years, India has extended its development partnership programme to the island nation through several collaborative projects.

One notable initiative under the India-United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Fund was the “Resilient Rehabilitation of Salisbury Educational Facility in Dominica Post-Hurricane Maria” project, valued at USD 1 million.

The project, approved in 2018, aimed at rehabilitating two school buildings severely damaged during Hurricane Maria in 2017 and was successfully completed in March 2020.

In February 2021, another USD 1 million India-UNDP project, titled “Strengthening Sustainable Livelihoods and Resilience in the Kalinago Community,” was launched to support the indigenous Kalinago people through improved infrastructure and livelihood opportunities. This project was completed in January 2024.

Continuing its commitment, India also launched the second phase of the Community Resilience Project in the Kalinago Territory on December 19, 2024, under the India-UNDP Fund, with a grant of USD 1 million.

The project remains ongoing and aims to enhance resilience, economic empowerment, and disaster preparedness in vulnerable communities.

Through these initiatives, India continues to deepen its partnership with Dominica and the wider Caribbean region, reinforcing its policy of development cooperation guided by mutual respect, sustainability, and shared growth.
