India is closely monitoring reports of attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, including incidents targeting homes, businesses and places of worship, and has consistently raised the matter with Dhaka authorities, the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
In a written reply, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said India expects the interim government of Bangladesh to “thoroughly investigate” these incidents and ensure that “all perpetrators of killings, arson and violence against minorities” are brought to justice.
CPI(M) MP John Brittas had asked for details of India’s actions on reports of killings, arson and intimidation targeting minorities and deterioration of law and order in Bangladesh over the past two years.
Singh highlighted that the issue has been raised at the highest levels, including by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his April 4, 2025, meeting with Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, and by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during his February 16, 2025, meeting with Foreign Advisor Touhid Hossain.

“The government of India continues to monitor reports of incidents of attacks against minorities in Bangladesh, including on their homes, properties, businesses and places of worship. India has consistently raised the matter of safety and security of the minorities with the authorities in Bangladesh, at both political and diplomatic levels on several occasions,” Singh said.
On a related query regarding remarks by the chief adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government attributing attacks to personal or political differences, Singh said such statements “only embolden the extremists and the perpetrators of such crimes, and deepens the sense of fear and insecurity among the minorities.”
“The primary responsibility for the protection of life and liberty of all citizens of Bangladesh, including minorities, rests with the government of Bangladesh,” he added.
