The Centre on Saturday said the construction of the 4-lane access-controlled Barabanki-Bahraich stretch of National Highway-927 (NH-927) will significantly strengthen trade ties between India and Nepal.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, the project is expected to boost cross-border commerce, enhance regional connectivity and support livelihoods in border areas. The highway will improve access to the key Rupaidiha-Nepalgunj route, which handles a major share of exports from India to Nepal.

India remains Nepal’s largest trading partner, accounting for over 60 per cent of its total trade, underlining the deep economic interdependence between the two countries. The new highway is expected to further accelerate this exchange by ensuring faster and more reliable connectivity.

Officials said the project will reduce travel time between Barabanki and Bahraich by nearly 50 per cent, from around 150 minutes to 75 minutes, while increasing average vehicle speeds from 40 kmph to 80 kmph.

The improved connectivity is likely to benefit the movement of agricultural and food products such as rice, wheat, vegetables, dairy products and livestock feed, which are regularly transported to Nepal. Faster transit is expected to reduce spoilage of perishable goods, directly benefiting farmers and traders.

The project is also expected to complement logistics development at Rupaidiha, where daily truck movement is projected to increase, creating opportunities in warehousing, transportation and allied services.

Officials said the highway will have a wider socio-economic impact in border districts, generating employment in logistics, hospitality and small businesses, while improving access to healthcare, education and markets.

“With faster roads, truck drivers, farmers and small traders will benefit from reduced costs, higher earnings and more reliable income opportunities,” the ministry said.

The NH-927 project is expected to play a key role in deepening economic cooperation between India and Nepal, strengthening trade infrastructure and unlocking growth potential along the border corridor.
