The Supreme Court of India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation to strengthen judicial cooperation between the two countries, officials said on Tuesday.

The agreement was signed in Moscow by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation Igor Krasnov during a meeting held at the Marble Hall of the Russian apex court.

A delegation from the Indian Supreme Court accompanied the Chief Justice of India during the visit, where both sides held discussions on strengthening institutional ties between the two judiciaries.

According to an official release, the meeting began with a focus on the historical and friendly relations shared by India and Russia, followed by deliberations on contemporary judicial challenges and areas of cooperation.

The discussions highlighted the importance of mutual collaboration in addressing emerging legal and administrative challenges faced by courts in both countries.

A key focus area of the talks was the ongoing digital transformation of judicial systems, including the use of technology and artificial intelligence in court procedures to improve efficiency and enhance access to justice.

The two sides also discussed the importance of high-quality judicial education and capacity building for judges and court officials.

The release said the discussions then moved towards exploring practical steps to deepen judicial cooperation based on the principles of sovereign equality and international legal frameworks agreed upon by both nations.

Following detailed deliberations, both Chief Justices signed the MoU, formally committing to enhanced cooperation through exchange visits, short-term and long-term training programmes, as well as joint seminars and conferences.

It was also agreed that a joint working group would be set up to develop strategies and mechanisms for sustained technological collaboration and deeper institutional engagement between the two judiciaries.

Officials said the agreement is expected to further strengthen institutional linkages and promote knowledge-sharing between the Supreme Courts of India and Russia in the coming years.
