India’s semiconductor dream turning into reality, says Vaishnaw.

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw held a high-level meeting in Gandhinagar on Monday to review the progress of all four semiconductor chip plants currently under development in Gujarat.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, which was attended by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, and IT Minister Arjun Modhwadia, the Union Minister said that work on all four projects is “showing good progress”.

Vaishnaw underlined that India’s growing focus on electronics manufacturing and semiconductor fabrication is a critical component of the nation’s economic growth strategy, as emphasised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Three plants are expected to reach a good production level within the next two to three months, with pilot production already started at the Kaynes and CG sites,” Vaishnaw said.

He added that Micron’s mini-plant has already begun pilot production and is now being ramped up, while the fabrication unit being constructed in Dholera is also advancing steadily.

“Dholera is set to become a major high-tech manufacturing hub in the days to come,” the Union Minister told reporters.

Semiconductors form the backbone of modern technology, powering vital systems across healthcare, transport, communication, defence, and space sectors.

As the global economy moves towards greater digitalisation and automation, semiconductors have become integral to both economic resilience and strategic autonomy.

Since the launch of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) in 2021, the country has made remarkable progress in transforming its semiconductor vision into reality.

To support this effort, the government announced a Rs 76,000 crore Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, with a significant portion of the corpus already committed to various projects.

A major milestone in India’s semiconductor journey was achieved on August 28 with the launch of one of the country’s first end-to-end Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) Pilot Line Facilities in Sanand, Gujarat.

Semiconductor company CG-Semi rolled out the first ‘Made in India’ chip from this facility.

In June 2023, the government approved the first proposal for establishing a semiconductor manufacturing unit in Sanand.

To date, the government has approved 10 semiconductor manufacturing projects with a cumulative investment exceeding Rs 1.60 lakh crore across six states Gujarat, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has already begun work on the next phase of India’s semiconductor programme, titled Semicon 2.0.

The Ministry is holding internal consultations and engaging with various line ministries to finalise its framework, aiming to strengthen India’s position as a global hub for semiconductor innovation and production.
