India on Friday successfully test-fired the short-range ballistic missile Agni-1 from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha, marking another step in strengthening the country’s strategic deterrence capabilities, the Defence Ministry said.
The launch was carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command and validated all operational and technical parameters, officials confirmed.
According to the ministry, the test demonstrated the missile system’s reliability and readiness as part of India’s operational arsenal. The Agni-1 is a key component of India’s nuclear-capable missile family and is already deployed with the armed forces.
Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Agni series forms the backbone of India’s land-based strategic deterrent system. The Agni-1, in particular, is a short-range ballistic missile designed for rapid deployment and high accuracy targeting.
Officials said the successful trial reaffirms India’s continued focus on maintaining credible minimum deterrence amid evolving regional and global security challenges.

The Agni missile family includes systems with ranges from 700 km to 3,500 km, covering Agni-1 to Agni-4 variants, all of which have already been inducted into service. The latest test is part of routine validation exercises to ensure operational readiness of strategic assets.
Defence experts note that such periodic tests are critical for maintaining the reliability of missile systems, ensuring that both hardware and command-and-control mechanisms remain fully functional under operational conditions.
The Chandipur test range, located along the Odisha coast, is one of India’s primary missile testing facilities and is regularly used for trials of strategic and tactical weapon systems.
The Defence Ministry did not disclose additional technical specifications of the test, but emphasised that all mission objectives were successfully achieved.
India has been steadily upgrading its strategic weapons systems in recent years, with a focus on enhancing range, precision, mobility and survivability of its missile arsenal.
The successful launch of Agni-1 comes amid ongoing efforts to modernise the country’s defence infrastructure and reinforce its strategic preparedness in a rapidly changing geopolitical environment.
