According to defense sources, the Indian Navy successfully tested the K-4 ballistic missile, which can hit targets up to 3,500 kilometers away, from the nuclear-powered submarine INS Arighaat on Thursday.
The test was carried out in the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday. According to officials, the test findings are being analysed. This test, which was conducted by the Strategic Forces Command, is a major step forward for India's defense capabilities, especially in bolstering its nuclear deterrence.
“The ballistic missile was tested for its full range. Detailed analysis is underway, and top military and political leadership will be briefed once the evaluation is complete,” said defence sources.
Before this test, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) carried out extensive trials of the missile system using underwater platforms to ensure reliability and performance.
The Navy inducted INS Arighaat, its second nuclear-powered submarine capable of launching ballistic missiles, in August 2024 at the Ship Building Centre in Visakhapatnam. Alongside INS Arihant, the submarine enhances India’s strategic defence assets.
The Navy intends to carry out more K-4 missile system tests, according to the sources. It is anticipated that a third nuclear submarine would be added to the fleet by 2025.
This accomplishment demonstrates India's developing underwater strategic defense capabilities and solidifies its standing as a major actor in international security.
