President Droupadi Murmu addresses the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament on the first day of the Budget Session, in New Delhi, Friday, Jan. 31, 2025. Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla are also seen.

President Droupadi Murmu on Friday announced that, with the government's efforts, India is poised to become the third-largest economy in the world.

Speaking at the joint sitting of Parliament to mark the commencement of the Budget session, Murmu reiterated that the government’s mantra is “Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas”.

She arrived in a horse-drawn buggy, with the national anthem playing to open the address.

Reflecting on India’s progress, Murmu noted, “Two months ago, we celebrated the 75 years of adopting our constitution, and a few days ago, we completed our journey of 75 years. On behalf of all Indians, I bow down to Babasaheb Ambedkar and all others in the Constitution Committee.”

Murmu also paid tribute to the makers of the Constitution, particularly Dr B.R. Ambedkar, before expressing her grief over the tragic stampede at the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, which claimed 30 lives.

“Mahakumbh is a festival of India’s cultural identity and social enlightenment. Crores of devotees have already taken the holy dip. I express grief over the incident that occurred on Mouni Amavasya. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” she added.

The President also recalled former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away recently, saying, “We lost former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh a few days ago. He served the nation as Prime Minister for ten years and was also a long-standing member of Parliament. I pay respect to Dr. Singh.”

Highlighting key government initiatives, President Murmu remarked that decisions in recent times have been taken swiftly, with particular focus on women, youth, the middle class, and farmers.

“My government has taken strong steps to provide housing through Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojna, and has decided to provide 3 crores more houses under this scheme. My government is committed to fulfilling the middle class's dream of owning a house,” she said.

In another important announcement, Murmu confirmed that under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme, senior citizens aged 70 and above will be provided with health insurance covering ₹5 lakh per year.

“Six crore senior citizens will benefit from this scheme,” she added.

The session continued with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tabling the Economic Survey, ahead of the Union Budget to be presented on February 1.

The Economic Survey, which will be presented in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, provides insights into the state of the economy and forecasts for the next fiscal year. It may also offer an indication of the government's fiscal policies ahead of the Budget presentation.

The Budget session will conclude on April 4, with the Finance Minister presenting the Union Budget on February 1 at 11 am in the Lok Sabha.

The speech will outline key fiscal proposals, taxation reforms, and other significant announcements.
