India is gearing up to host its largest-ever contingent for the 2025 edition of the India Open, a prestigious event on the BWF World Tour Super 750 circuit.
The tournament, set to take place from January 14 to 19 at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall within the Indira Gandhi Stadium, marks a significant milestone for Indian badminton.
With 21 entries in total, this is the largest number of Indian players to compete in the event, highlighting the country's rising prominence on the global badminton stage.
The 2025 India Open will see Indian badminton stars vying for top honours across various categories, including men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
The tournament has grown in stature since it became part of the BWF World Tour in 2023, with a prize pool of USD 9,50,000 and valuable BWF World Tour points on offer. It’s an excellent opportunity for players to showcase their skills and earn recognition at the global level.
Indian badminton has come a long way, and this year’s entry list proves just how much the country’s players have developed. In previous editions of the tournament, India had fielded 14 players each year, but this time, the contingent has been expanded, and the Indian badminton community is buzzing with excitement.
In 2024, India saw a strong performance with Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy reaching the men’s doubles final, while HS Prannoy made it to the men’s singles last four.
This year, India’s squad will feature prominent players like Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy, and PV Sindhu, along with up-and-coming talents who are determined to make their mark.
For instance, Lakshya Sen, the 2022 men’s singles champion, will be one of the top contenders, along with HS Prannoy, who has been consistent in recent years.
The expectations are also high for PV Sindhu, who will be looking to bounce back and challenge for the prestigious title after being one of the leading figures in Indian badminton for years.
The mixed doubles category will feature promising players like Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, while K Sathish Kumar and Aadya Variyath will also be looking to make an impact.
The men’s doubles category is especially competitive, with top teams such as China’s Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang, Paris Olympics silver medalists Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik from Malaysia, and Danish duo Kim Astrup and Anders Rasmussen all set to compete. Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto will also add to the depth and excitement in the men’s doubles event.
The women’s doubles event will feature some well-established Indian pairings, including Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto, Rutuparna Panda and Swetaparna Panda, as well as several new faces eager to prove their mettle.
With so many high-level players in the field, the competition promises to be fierce, and fans can expect several exciting matches throughout the tournament.
The fact that only two players from the top-20 ranked men’s singles players will be missing from the competition shows the level of talent that will be on display. Similarly, in the women’s singles draw, 14 of the top-20 players will be competing, underscoring the high stakes of the event.
This year’s India Open will not only showcase established names but also bring new and fresh faces to the forefront, providing a platform for emerging talents.
The mixed doubles category will also see a host of exciting matchups, with the likes of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, K Sathish Kumar and Aadya Variyath, Rohan Kapoor and G Ruthvika Shivani, and Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh competing for honours.
