Taliban authorities said on Monday that large-scale rescue operations were underway after the 6.0-magnitude earthquake and multiple aftershocks struck a remote mountainous region just before midnight. Entire families were buried as homes collapsed while they slept.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that over 1.2 million people likely experienced strong or very strong shaking. Tremors were felt across a wide area, including Kabul and Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad.
At least five aftershocks were recorded during the night. Officials reported widespread casualties and destruction across at least five provinces as emergency teams rushed to reach the worst-hit areas.
India’s relief package includes 1000 family tents delivered to Kabul and 15 tonnes of food aid moved to Kunar by the Indian Mission. More supplies are scheduled to be sent directly from India beginning Tuesday.
