The Indian Army recently celebrated the 62nd anniversary of the Battle of Walong, a significant event in its history, on October 17. This occasion marked the beginning of a month-long series of activities dedicated to honouring the courage and sacrifices of soldiers and local citizens during the 1962 conflict.

The opening ceremony took place under the auspices of the Walong Brigade and was attended by Smt. Dasanglu Pul, the Minister for Women, Child Development, and Cultural Affairs. Alongside her were various officials from the Indian Army, the Arunachal Pradesh government, and the local community.

The commemoration commenced with an inspiring performance by the Pipes & Drums of the Walong Brigade, which set a patriotic tone for the event. A cultural program followed, showcasing the rich heritage of the region. To further engage with the history of the battle, Smt. Pul flagged off two battlefield treks.

These treks, involving a joint effort by Indian Army personnel and National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets, retraced the paths taken by soldiers during the 1962 battle.

The goal of these treks is not only to promote battlefield tourism but also to connect participants with the beautiful scenery of the Lohit Valley, a place that symbolises resilience and bravery.

Moreover, adventure treks to the stunning Jachep Tso and Kundao Tso lakes were initiated. These treks invite participants to experience the breathtaking high-altitude lakes set against snow-capped mountains.

The initiative aims to inspire local youth to explore opportunities in adventure tourism and entrepreneurship, encouraging them to contribute to the region's economic growth.

As part of the commemoration efforts, the Indian Army dedicated several Sadbhavna Projects to benefit the local community. This aligns with the government's Vibrant Village initiative, which focuses on community development.

Smt. Pul received these projects on behalf of the residents, highlighting the collaboration between the military and the local population in fostering development.

The month-long celebration will feature various other activities, including a cycle expedition from Namsai to Namti, a motorcycle journey from Mipi to Meshai, white-water rafting from Walong to Wakro, and a half marathon from Kibithu to Walong. These events aim to honour the sacrifices made during the battle while positioning Lohit Valley as a prominent adventure tourism destination.

In line with its commitment to the community, the Indian Army will also hold medical and veterinary camps, providing essential healthcare services to the local population. The culmination of the commemorative activities is set for November 13-14, when a grand ceremony will take place.

This event will feature a spectacular light and sound show, martial arts displays, and heartfelt tributes to veterans and families of those who fought in the battle.
