The Indian Army’s Madras Regiment paid tribute on Thursday to the valour of Travancore’s forces who, 284 years ago, decisively defeated the Dutch East India Company in the famed Battle of Colachel, one of the earliest recorded Indian triumphs over European military power.

The commemorative ceremony took place at the Colachel War Memorial in Tamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari district. The battle, fought on 31 July 1741, was unique for its strategic combination of land and naval warfare, and is widely regarded as a seminal moment in Indian military history.

Commanding the Travancore forces was King Marthanda Varma, under whose leadership the regional army overcame the Dutch in an encounter historians describe as the first major Indian military success against a modern European naval power. The battle site lies approximately 68 kilometres south of present-day Thiruvananthapuram.

“This earned the House of Travancore the unique distinction of being the only Asian military power to ever have defeated a leading European sea power at sea and land,” a Defence Ministry release stated.

To commemorate the 1741 victory, King Marthanda Varma erected a Victory Pillar near the Colachel beach, an enduring symbol of Travancore’s military prowess and the strategic acumen of its forces.

Colonel Avinash Kumar Singh, Commanding Officer of the Madras Regiment at Pangode Military Station in Thiruvananthapuram, laid a wreath at the memorial and led the day’s homage. The event drew attendance from serving military personnel, veterans, senior civil officials and enthusiastic locals.

Among those present were Major General VDI Devavaram, SM, VSM (Retd), Major General Flora (Retd), Sub-Collector Vinayakumar Meena, Colachel DSP Kannadasan, and Municipal Commissioner Kanniyappan.

To mark the occasion, the Indian Army also held a public weapons display, drawing interest from schoolchildren, NCC cadets, and residents of nearby towns.

The Colachel commemoration serves not only as a historical remembrance but also a proud reaffirmation of indigenous resistance against colonial forces—a story of courage, foresight and tactical brilliance that resonates across centuries.
