Major General Kaushik Mukherjee, General Officer Commanding of the ‘Ace of Spades’ division of the Indian Army, has inaugurated a war memorial with the names of civilians killed in the cross-border shelling in Poonch during Operation Sindoor. The war memorial has been constructed by the Durga Battalion of the Indian Army’s Poonch Brigade at the Ajote War Memorial in Poonch.
One of the victim's daughters felt emotional after seeing her father’s name inked in the list of the martyrs, saying she was happy to see his name here. Another victim who lost two children in the shelling while himself suffering from minor injuries told reporters that “The army did a good job” by honouring the civilians who were killed by Pakistani shelling.
India, on the night of May 6-7, launched operation Sindoor in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which terrorists gunned down 26 civilians, mostly tourists, when they were enjoying holidays with their families. The Indian armed forces said it targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan, which led to the death of more than 100 terrorists affiliated with terror outfits like the Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.
After the attack, Pakistan retaliated with cross-border shelling across the Line of Control and Jammu and Kashmir, as well as attempted drone attacks along the border regions. As per the stats provided by the Ministry of External Affairs, 16 people lost their lives in the Pakistani shelling, while 59 more received injuries.
