As the nation gears up to honour the brave soldiers who fought in the Battle of Walong during the Sino-Indian War of 1962, the Indian Army is initiating a month-long series of commemorative events.

This tribute marks the 62nd anniversary of Walong Day, which will commence on October 17, 2024, and run until November 14, 2024. This initiative is designed to celebrate the spirit, sacrifice, and bravery of those who valiantly defended the eastern front of the country.

The month-long commemoration promises to engage local communities through a vibrant array of activities, each reflecting the adventurous spirit of the Indian Army amidst the rugged terrain of Arunachal Pradesh.

Planned events include exciting activities such as white water rafting, motorcycle and bicycle rallies, battlefield treks, and even a half marathon. These activities aim to not only honour the memory of the fallen heroes but also promote community involvement.

Additionally, the Army will conduct medical and veterinary camps in remote villages, further strengthening the connection between the soldiers and the local population. This outreach effort underscores the commitment of the Indian Army to support the communities surrounding them.

The highlight of these commemorations will occur on Walong Day, November 14, with the inauguration of the newly renovated Walong War Memorial. This memorial serves as a lasting symbol of respect and honour for the brave hearts who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

The day will feature a solemn wreath-laying ceremony, along with a poignant narration of the battle, showcasing the heroism displayed during that time. Traditional performances by local Mishmi and Meyor dancers will enrich the day’s events, reflecting the cultural heritage of the region.

In addition to the memorial inauguration, the celebrations will include the inauguration of the Shaurya Sthal at Lama Spur and key infrastructure projects in border areas. These initiatives are part of ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity and security in this strategic region.

A special felicitation ceremony will honour the next of kin of war heroes, veterans, and the families of porters who played essential roles during the operations. This acknowledgment demonstrates the Army’s commitment to recognizing the invaluable contributions of all individuals involved in these historic events.

The Indian Army invites everyone to participate in this heartfelt tribute to the heroes of Walong. This commemoration is not just a remembrance of the past but also a source of inspiration for present and future generations.

It encourages the values of service, sacrifice, and dedication to one’s country. As the nation comes together to honour these brave soldiers, it is a reminder of the spirit of unity and resilience that defines the Indian ethos.
