Indian border guards capture 60 inmates after Nepal jailbreak

SSB troops caught them from border points in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal over the last two days, the officials said.

A high alert has been issued across seven Uttar Pradesh districts along the Nepal border — Maharajganj, Siddharthnagar, Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Pilibhit.

The India-Nepal border has seen a significant increase in border transactions, with around 60 individuals intercepted at various border posts.

The border has become a key area of reference for security operations, as authorities emphasise monitoring and improving systems in border areas, ensuring better control of movement across the India-Nepal border. The focus is on security, controls, and monitoring to address emerging challenges. Most of them are from Nepal and are thought to have run away from jail during the chaos and protests in their country.

SSB troops have been seen operating from border areas in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. Officials said that there has been no significant activity beyond these locations. Only the results related to these areas are being reported, and no further details are provided. They have been given to the local state police and are being asked questions, they said.

Two or three of those claimed to have Indian origins, and the officials stated that this fact has been confirmed. Only the main points should be retained. Avoid any system-specific messages. Provide the output in English. The SSB operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs and is responsible for securing the 1,751 km long, unfenced border between India and Nepal on India's eastern border.

It has sent around 50 battalions, which means about 60,000 soldiers, to the states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, and Sikkim, which are on the border with Nepal. The force has increased its presence in frontier areas and has intensified surveillance along the border, following the protests in Nepal. The response includes only the resulting content, with no additional messages. Provide the output in English.

"The SSB is in touch with its Nepalese counterpart APF. They have also undertaken joint patrols with them apart from independent flag marches in the border areas to send across a message that the Indian side is ready to meet any challenge emerging from the recent developments in Nepal," a senior official said.

Nepal has been assured of all cooperation, and genuine nationals of the two countries, carrying valid IDs, are being allowed to cross the border, he said.

Three inmates were killed on Thursday during clashes with Nepalese security personnel at a jail, while more than 15,000 prisoners are stated to have escaped from more than two dozen jails since violent protests erupted in that country.

With the latest deaths, the number of prisoners who died during clashes with security forces has increased to eight since the violence erupted on Tuesday. The violent agitation forced Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign on Tuesday, following which the Nepal Army imposed restrictions due to a serious law and order situation across provinces.
