An Indian fishing vessel with 13 crew members collided with an Indian Naval submarine near the coast of Goa, according to officials. Following the incident, the Indian Navy launched a large search and rescue operation, deploying six ships and aircraft.

So far, 11 crew members from the Indian fishing vessel have been rescued, while two are still missing.

The collision happened 70 nautical miles off the Goa coast, involving the Indian fishing vessel Marthoma and a Scorpene-class Indian submarine, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defence.

"Search and rescue efforts for the remaining two are in progress, coordinated with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre Mumbai (MRCC). Additional resources, including from the Coast Guard, have been redirected to the area to support the search," the statement said.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collision between the Indian submarine and the Indian vessel.

Scorpene-Class Submarines

Scorpene-class submarines are an important part of the Indian Navy's power in the Indian Ocean. These submarines are capable of multiple missions, such as anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying, and surveillance.

Built with advanced technology, Scorpene-class submarines have superior stealth features. These include advanced acoustic silencing techniques, low noise levels, a hydro-dynamically optimised shape, and the ability to launch precise attacks using guided weapons.

They can launch attacks both underwater and on the surface, using torpedoes or tube-launched anti-ship missiles.
