Androth is an Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Watercraft (ASW-SWC).

On October 6, the Indian Navy will commission its second state-of-the-art Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), named Androth, at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam.

The ceremony will be presided over by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command. This event marks the formal induction of the second of sixteen ASW-SWC ships into the Navy’s fleet, further strengthening India’s maritime defence capabilities.

The Androth was constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd. in Kolkata, incorporating over 80 per cent indigenous components, aligning with the Government of India’s vision of Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) and showcasing the nation’s growing maritime self-sufficiency. The vessel’s construction was overseen by the Directorate of Ship Production and the Warship Overseeing Team, Kolkata, and it was officially handed over to the Indian Navy on September 13.

Named after Androth Island in the Lakshadweep archipelago, the ship symbolises India’s commitment to protecting its extensive maritime territories. The new Androth carries forward the legacy of its predecessor, INS Androth (P69), which served the nation with distinction for over 27 years before its decommissioning.

The Androth is equipped with cutting-edge technology, including advanced weapons and sensor suites, modern communication systems, and waterjet propulsion, enabling it to detect, track, and neutralise underwater threats with high precision. Beyond its primary role in anti-submarine warfare, the vessel is designed for versatility, capable of undertaking maritime surveillance, search and rescue operations, and coastal defence missions. This multi-role capability makes Androth a critical asset in the Indian Navy’s operational framework.

The commissioning of Androth reinforces India’s maritime security architecture, enhancing the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities and underscoring the nation’s dedication to designing, developing, and building world-class warships indigenously. This milestone reflects India’s strides toward self-reliance in defence manufacturing and its resolve to safeguard its maritime interests.
