CDSCO ensures quality as Indias pharma exports rise.

India has secured the 11th position in global pharmaceutical exports in 2023, reflecting the country’s growing role in the international market.

The Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers, Anupriya Patel, highlighted this achievement in the Rajya Sabha, attributing it to the government’s continuous efforts to ensure the quality, safety, and efficacy of medicines.

According to a research analysis by Bain and Company, published in 2025, India’s total pharmaceutical exports contributed to three per cent of the global market.

The minister stated that several measures have been taken by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to uphold high standards in medicine production.

One of the key steps undertaken was the implementation of risk-based inspections of drug manufacturing and testing facilities. In December 2022, the CDSCO, in collaboration with state regulatory bodies, conducted thorough inspections across the country.

As a result, more than 900 units were assessed, leading to nearly 700 regulatory actions to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.

The government has also taken significant steps in regulating the prices of essential medicines. The National Pharmaceuticals Pricing Policy (NPPP), introduced in 2012, provides guidelines for controlling the prices of medicines that are widely used by consumers.

This policy focuses on market-based pricing rather than cost-based pricing, ensuring that drug prices remain reasonable while maintaining their availability in the market.

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), functioning under the Department of Pharmaceuticals, is responsible for enforcing the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013. The NPPA determines ceiling prices for various medicines to prevent excessive pricing and ensure affordability for consumers.

To enhance transparency and accessibility, the government has introduced a mobile application called Pharma Sahi Daam (PSD). This app allows consumers to check the brand name, composition, ceiling price, and maximum retail price of medicines.

It is available on both Android and Apple devices, making it easier for people to access accurate pricing information.

Additionally, all official price notifications regarding medicines are published on the NPPA’s website. This initiative ensures that consumers and industry stakeholders can stay informed about any changes in drug pricing policies.
