A Goa-bound IndiGo flight operating from Delhi made an emergency landing at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Wednesday evening after suffering a mid-air engine malfunction.

The pilot of flight 6E-6271 issued a ‘PAN PAN PAN’ emergency call, a distress signal used for non-life-threatening yet urgent situations, after reporting a failure in engine number 1. The aircraft was diverted and landed safely in Mumbai under full emergency conditions.

“The pilot declared ‘PAN PAN PAN’ (an urgent message indicating a non-life-threatening emergency) due to a malfunction in engine number 1," an official maintained.

IndiGo later confirmed the diversion, citing a “technical snag.” “A technical snag was detected on flight 6E 6271 while flying from Delhi to Manohar International Airport, Goa, on July 16. Following procedures, the aircraft was diverted and landed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai," a spokesperson for the airline said.

“Full emergency was declared for IndiGo flight 6E-6271, operating on Delhi-Goa route, after it was diverted to Mumbai due to one engine failure,” informed a source quoted by news agency PTI.

The number of passengers onboard the flight was not disclosed. IndiGo added that a replacement aircraft had been arranged to resume the journey.

“While the aircraft will undergo necessary checks and maintenance before resuming operations, an alternative aircraft has been arranged for completing the journey, which will depart shortly with the customers,” the airline stated.

Mumbai airport officials confirmed the timeline of the incident. “Following the diversion of a Delhi–Goa flight due to a technical snag, a full emergency was declared at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai (CSMIA) at 21:35 hours on 16 July 2025. The flight landed safely at 21:52 hours. The full emergency status was withdrawn at 21:57 hours," a CSMIA spokesperson said.

“Passengers were safely deboarded and assisted by terminal staff. While the airline coordinates alternative onward travel for the passengers, CSMIA’s Terminal Operations team remains on standby to provide all necessary support," the airport spokesperson added.

Airport operations remained unaffected during the emergency. “There has been no impact on overall airport operations. At CSMIA, safety always remains our highest priority," the official said.

This emergency follows a separate incident involving another IndiGo flight, which briefly took off again after touchdown at Patna’s Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport on Tuesday. The flight, carrying 173 passengers, aborted landing due to what officials described as an “unstable approach.” The aircraft landed safely after circling the airport.
