The Supreme Court has released an inquiry report compiled by Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay concerning allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma.
The report, submitted to the apex court, calls for a deeper investigation into the matter.
The controversy centres around an alleged cash recovery following a fire incident at a property linked to Justice Varma. In his report, Chief Justice Upadhyay observed that, prima facie, the matter warrants further scrutiny.
Alongside the report, the Supreme Court also made public Justice Varma’s response, in which he vehemently denied the accusations.
“It clearly appeared to be a conspiracy to frame and malign me,” he stated, rejecting any connection to the cash allegedly recovered.
Justice Varma asserted that neither he nor his family had ever placed any cash in the storeroom where the recovery was reported. He clarified that the room in question was an outhouse, distinct from the main residence where he and his family reside.

Chief Justice Upadhyay, acting on the directive of the Chief Justice of India (CJI), instructed Justice Varma to preserve all digital communications, including messages and data stored on his phone, as the controversy continued to unfold.
In his official statement to Chief Justice Upadhyay, Justice Varma reiterated his categorical denial of the allegations.
He maintained that the recovery of cash, reportedly found by fire tenders during the firefighting operation, was not linked to him in any way.
According to media reports, the incident occurred on 14 March when a fire broke out at Justice Varma’s residence. Firefighters responding to the scene allegedly discovered cash during their operations.
However, at the time of the incident, Justice Varma was not present at his house.
The matter has now been escalated for further examination, even as Justice Varma maintains that the allegations against him are fabricated and aimed at tarnishing his reputation.
