On August 23, India celebrated its first National Space Day, a significant event marking the country's achievements and future aspirations in space exploration. The occasion was highlighted by an exhibition at Bharat Mandapam, showcasing advancements and accomplishments in space technology. President Droupadi Murmu, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, and ISRO Chairman S. Somanath were present to honour the event.
ISRO Chairman S. Somanath underscored the importance of National Space Day, stating that it symbolises a vision for the future of the space sector. Reflecting on the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission, Somanath noted how the mission's impact was beyond initial expectations.
The Prime Minister’s visit to the control centre and his declaration of August 23 as National Space Day highlighted the mission’s success and the landing site’s designation as Shiva Shakti point.
Somanath emphasised that this year's celebration saw widespread participation from various sectors, including government departments, educational institutions, science organisations, NGOs, and the public. The enthusiasm and energy surrounding the event were palpable, marking a significant milestone in India's space journey.
The ISRO Chairman expressed gratitude to President Murmu for her involvement in space activities and for inaugurating the maiden National Space Day. He also thanked Union Minister Jitendra Singh for his support and commitment to the space sector.
Somanath highlighted the importance of creating a vibrant space ecosystem and the role of the day in envisioning future actions for the space program, especially in what is referred to as the Amrit Kaal.
National Space Day celebrates the remarkable achievements of India’s space missions, notably the Chandrayaan-3, which successfully landed on the moon's South Pole on August 23, 2023.
This feat made India the fourth country to achieve a lunar landing and the first to land near the moon's southern polar region. In recognition of this landmark achievement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared August 23 as National Space Day.
The theme for the inaugural National Space Day, "Touching Lives While Touching the Moon: India’s Space Saga," reflects the nation's progress and ambitions in space exploration. The day serves not only as a commemoration of past successes but also as a platform to inspire future advancements and foster continued growth in the space sector.
