In a tragic incident in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district, a policeman allegedly shot dead his colleague with an AK-47 rifle before taking his own life early Sunday, officials reported.
The incident occurred while the two policemen, along with another colleague, were travelling in a police van from Sopore in north Kashmir to the Subsidiary Training Centre (STC) in Talwara, Reasi district.
Around 6:30 a.m., the bullet-riddled bodies of the two policemen were discovered near the Kali Mata temple in the Rehambal area of Udhampur.
Officials revealed that the head constable opened fire on the driver following an argument and then turned the weapon on himself. A third policeman, who was also in the vehicle, escaped unharmed and is being questioned as part of the investigation.
Udhampur SSP Amod Ashok Nagpure confirmed that the accused used his service AK-47 rifle in the shooting. "Both were posted in Sopore and hailed from Kashmir. Initial findings suggest the accused shot his colleague before committing suicide," he said.
Earlier, the police issued a statement:
"Today, at about 6:30 a.m., Rehambal police station received information that two policemen from Sopore traveling toward STC Talwara in a department vehicle had suffered bullet injuries due to firing. Initial investigation suggests this is a case of fratricide and suicide. Senior officers are at the scene, and further investigation is ongoing."
The incident highlights the growing concerns over stress and internal disputes within the police force.
