J&K's Kulgam toll 8, with 2 soldiers and 6 terrorists killed

Terrorist activities intensified in troubled Jammu and Kashmir during the weekend with an attack on an Army camp in Rajouri on Sunday and twin encounters at Kulgam continuing from Saturday, pushing up the death toll to eight, with two soldiers martyred and six terrorists killed.

 

A soldier was injured as two terrorists fired at an Army camp in Rajouri and fled as security forces retaliated. 

 

Search operations have been launched to find them

 

The twin encounters began on Saturday in two villages of Kulgam district. Bodies of two terrorists were recovered from Modergam encounter site while four bodies of terrorists were recovered from the Frisal Chingam site, officials said.

 

Talking to reporters on Sunday, J&K DGP RR Swain said, according to confirmation of bodies, six terrorists were killed.  This was "significant to strengthen the security environment in the state. Operations against militants and flow of information from public proves this fight will reach its logical conclusion," he added.

 

Security forces recovered bodies of two more terrorists on Sunday, taking the number of ultras killed to six, officials said.


Lance Naik Pradeep Nain, an elite Para commando lost his life in a gunfight at Modergam village as security personnel came under fire during  search operations when they tracked three terrorists holed up in one place.


Havaldar Raj Kumar of 1st Rashtriya Rifles was killed when terrorists fired upon security forces searching Frisal Chingam village following a tip-off about Lashkar terrorists in the area. 


"Encounter started at Modergam Village of #Kulgam District. Police and Security Forces are on work. Further details shall follow," Kashmir Zone Police tweeted on X about the first encounter.


One terrorist remains trapped at Frisal Chingam and gunfights were continuing in both villages, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, VK Birdhi said after visiting the sites earlier in the day.


The anti-militancy operation was continuing on till last reports came in.
