J&K administration has issued a directive prohibiting selfies near streams, rivers and lakes, especially in Sonamarg, following a series of accidental drowning cases.
The Hung Park area of the Sonamarg, which is particularly famous for its crystal clear, gurgling streams, has been listed by authorities as no-selfie zones for the safety of locals, tourists and pilgrims headed for religious destinations.
This decision follows a series of drowning cases after people fell into the water while taking selfies from dangerous spots.
Signboards and hoardings have been put up at various spots, particularly along the banks of the River Sindh, which includes popular destinations like Gagangeer, Sonamarg, and Hung.
These places are renowned for their stunning landscapes that attract selfie-takers in hordes looking for that perfect shot.
The Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA) and the District Administration of Ganderbal are taking this initiative seriously, placing clear warnings on hoardings along the Hung stretch and other high-risk areas. The directive is straightforward: “No selfies near the river banks.”
“We urge all visitors to prioritise their safety over capturing the perfect photo,” said an official.
He added, “The picturesque landscape of Sonamarg is best enjoyed with caution and respect for nature’s power.”
On May 26, 2024, two tourists from Maharashtra were involved in a tragic accident while climbing the Thajiwas glacier. One tourist died instantly after falling into a crevasse, while the other sustained serious injuries.
Local reports indicated that the tourists were attempting to find a better vantage point for selfies when they stepped onto the glacier and fell into a crevasse concealed by fresh snowfall.
This safety initiative has been taken to avoid any further accidents, The SDA continues to monitor and enforce this directive, determined to create a safer environment for everyone enjoying the natural splendour of Sonamarg.
