The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting on the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024, originally scheduled for today, has been postponed. JPC Chairman and BJP MP Jagdambika Pal announced that the delay was due to requests from some members. According to Pal, the rescheduled meetings will take place on September 19 and 20 as initially planned.
Pal explained that the postponement was influenced by the timing of Ganesh Chaturthi, which falls on September 17, and the Eid-e-Milad procession taking place in Maharashtra today.
These events prompted the need to reschedule today's session. Despite the adjustment, Pal assured that the meeting would continue on the revised dates without further changes.
Earlier, it was reported that technical reasons were cited for the delay, but Pal clarified that the rescheduling was due to the religious and cultural observances affecting the committee members. The meeting, now set for September 19 and 20, will be held at the Parliament House Annexe in New Delhi.
During the rescheduled meetings, representatives from the Ministry of Minority Affairs will present oral evidence on the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024.
Additionally, the committee will hear from various experts and stakeholders. Among those scheduled to provide their insights are Prof. Faizan Mustafa, Vice Chancellor of Chanakya National Law University in Patna, and representatives from the Pasmanda Muslim Mahaaz and the All India Muslim Personal Law Board.
The committee will also consider the suggestions from the All India Sajjadanashin Council in Ajmer, Muslim Rashtriya Manch in Delhi, and Bharat First in Delhi. Their feedback will contribute to the discussions and evaluation of the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024.
