Erstwhile vice-president of India Jagdeep Dhankhar has applied for pension as a former legislator in Rajasthan Legislative Assembly. The Assembly Secretariat has started the process to approve his application.
Dhankhar, who recently resigned from the post of vice-president, had previously served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Rajasthan from 1993 to 1998, representing the Kishangarh constituency in Ajmer on a Congress ticket. During this period, he was also served as a member of the Assembly's Rules Committee from 1994 to 1997.
According to the rules, every former MLA in Rajasthan is entitled to a monthly pension of ₹35,000. There are also provisions for age-related increases; a former MLA over 70 years of age is eligible for an additional 20 per cent pension, while those over 80 receive a 30 pc increase.
Since Dhankhar is currently 74 years old, he qualifies for the 20 pc increase, which means he will receive a monthly pension of approximately ₹42,000. If he lives to be over 80, the amount will increase further in line with the rules.
Confirming the development, Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani said that Dhankhar’s application had been received and the necessary procedures were underway. He added that once the formalities are completed, Dhankhar would begin receiving the pension.
Dhankhar has had a long and illustrious career in public life. Besides being an MLA in Rajasthan, he has also been a Member of the Lok Sabha and held ministerial positions at the Centre. His political journey reached its peak when he was raised to the rank of vice-president of India in 2022. With this application, he becomes a part of those former legislators who are eligible for pension from the Rajasthan Assembly.
