Jairam Ramesh counters peace claims on J&K, Manipur

Terms the claims made by Amit Shah as ‘absurd and baseless’, says statement made to ‘divert public attention from the failures of the government’

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the President’s rule in Manipur is a “total failure”.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his recent statement that “peace has been established in Jammu-Kashmir and the Northeast”.

Ramesh called the claims made by Shah “absurd and baseless”, saying the statement was made to “divert public attention from the failures of the government”. In a post on X, the Congress MP wrote, “The claims made by the Union Home Minister about peace in Jammu and Kashmir and Manipur are absurd and baseless. These claims have actually been made to divert attention from his own colossal failures.”

While mentioning the recent Pahalgam attack on April 22 in Jammu Kashmir, Ramesh said, “The terrorists responsible for the barbaric terror attacks in Pahalgam on April 22 have not yet been brought to justice. As per reports, which haven’t been refuted yet, the terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack previously carried out attacks in Poonch in December 2023 and Gagangir and Gulmarg in October 2024.”

Ramesh also said that the law and order situation in Manipur is “extremely bad” and termed the President’s rule in the state as a “total failure”. He said on his social media post on Manipur, “Manipur is still burning. President’s rule has proved to be a total failure. The misery of the daily life and livelihood of the common people has given rise to anguish, despair and anger among them, which can be felt everywhere.”

He alleged that the Union Home Minister could neither punish the terrorists of Pahalgam nor restore normalcy in Manipur. “Yet he keeps trumpeting his alleged achievements in both of these states. In the history of independent India, there has rarely been a Union Home Minister whose entire tenure has been marked by maximum boasting and minimum achievements. Yes, if whatever he has done for his son is considered an achievement, it is a different matter,” said Ramesh.

On Monday, the Union Home Minister said the 11 years of the Modi government have proved to be a milestone in the direction of national security, citing the establishment of peace in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast. Though the incidents of violence have been reported in both of these places.

While the frequency of terror attacks has come down largely due to non-participation of the local youth in militancy.

The “viciousness and impact” of the militant attacks in Jammu and Kashmir has certainly increased largely due to the majority of the active militants in the state being foreigners, according to reports.
