US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is visiting India today for the second meeting of the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET). This marks the first visit to India by a senior American official since the Modi government came into power for the third term.
The visit was initially planned for February but was rescheduled to June 17-18 due to other commitments in the US.
Sullivan will be accompanied by Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and other top officials. They are scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
Additionally, Sullivan will meet his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval. The discussions are expected to culminate in a joint statement highlighting the progress made and the importance of the iCET mechanism for both countries. The bilateral talks will also cover the situation in West Asia.
Speaking to reporters at a Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland, Sullivan mentioned his direct travel from Switzerland to India for the iCET meeting. This visit follows a recent conversation between US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Modi.
On June 6, President Biden congratulated PM Modi on his electoral victory in the Lok Sabha polls and discussed Sullivan’s upcoming visit.
The White House released a statement emphasising the commitment of both leaders to deepening the US-India Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.
They stressed the importance of advancing a shared vision of a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. The statement also highlighted the discussions on Sullivan’s visit to engage the new Indian government on shared priorities, including a trusted, strategic technology partnership.
