Jamia Millia Islamia has suspended a professor following serious allegations of sexual harassment made by four PhD scholars.
The accusations include inappropriate conduct and uncivil language, with one scholar even cancelling her admission due to the professor’s behaviour.
The suspension, issued by officiating Vice Chancellor Mohammad Shakeel, invokes emergency powers and mandates an investigation by the university's Internal Complaints Committee.
During the inquiry, the professor is barred from teaching and must report his attendance to the chief proctor’s office.
The allegations include the use of "uncouth and uncivilised language" and making sexual advances during lectures.
The suspension order, dated July 16, highlights the gravity of the situation, citing the specific complaints of sexual harassment and disrespectful conduct from the professor, who is part of the Centre for Jawaharlal Nehru Studies.
“In view of the seriousness of the matter, one student has cancelled her PhD admission because of the professor's conduct,” the order notes.
The professor is prohibited from leaving the city without official approval during the suspension period.
Attempts to reach the accused professor for his response were unsuccessful.
