Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will undertake her first official visit to India from July 1 to 3 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate in the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Friday.

The summit will provide an opportunity for the two leaders to review the entire spectrum of bilateral cooperation and exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, the MEA said in a statement.

"The Summit will provide an opportunity for both sides to review and strengthen the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation as well as exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest," the ministry said.

The visit will be Prime Minister Takaichi's first official trip to India since assuming office and reflects the shared commitment of both countries to further strengthen the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

The summit follows Prime Minister Modi's visit to Tokyo in August 2025 for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit, where the two countries reaffirmed their resolve to deepen cooperation across strategic, economic, technological and security sectors.

Earlier this month, Modi and Takaichi also met on the sidelines of the 52nd G7 Summit in France, where they discussed expanding economic cooperation with a focus on trade and investment.

Following the meeting, Modi posted on X: "Had a great interaction with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi of Japan. India and Japan will continue to deepen ties in diverse sectors, with a priority on trade and investment."

During the 15th annual summit in Tokyo, India and Japan adopted the joint statement titled Partnership for Security and Prosperity of Our Next Generation and unveiled a Joint Vision for the Next Decade to guide cooperation across eight priority areas, including the economy, economic security, mobility, environment, technology and innovation, healthcare, people-to-people exchanges, and state-prefecture partnerships.

The two countries also signed a Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation aimed at strengthening defence ties in response to evolving geopolitical challenges in the Indo-Pacific.

Among the major outcomes was an Action Plan for India-Japan Human Resource Exchange and Cooperation, which seeks to facilitate the movement of more than 500,000 people over the next five years, including 50,000 skilled Indian professionals.

The leaders also launched the India-Japan Economic Security Initiative to strengthen resilient supply chains and expand cooperation in critical technologies such as semiconductors, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, critical minerals and clean energy.
