Senior lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani has launched a strong attack on Sonia Gandhi and the Congress, claiming that her leadership role in the Forum of Democratic Leaders, an organisation partially funded by George Soros, could expose her to anti-terror charges.
The forum, according to Jethmalani, has publicly advocated for the independence of Kashmir, a position he links to promoting secessionism, which is a serious offence under India's Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Jethmalani's allegations come amid growing tensions between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress over the involvement of George Soros in influencing Indian politics.
He has accused Sonia Gandhi of being part of an "unholy nexus" with Soros, stating that her role in the forum connects her directly to the billionaire financier, and that her actions, particularly her stance on Kashmir, could lead to criminal charges.
The BJP has been vocal in its claims that the Congress party, through this connection with Soros, is working to defame Indian business interests and undermine national security.
Jethmalani strongly backed these allegations, calling for an FIR to be filed against Gandhi under UAPA due to the forum's advocacy for Kashmir's independence.
However, neither Sonia Gandhi nor the Congress party has responded to Jethmalani's charges so far. The Congress leadership, including Gandhi’s daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, dismissed the accusations, calling them part of a BJP strategy to deflect attention from other issues.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra described the allegations as "ridiculous," stating that the BJP was using it to avoid discussing the Adani controversy in Parliament, a matter on which the Congress has been critical of the government.
Jethmalani, not backing down, criticised Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's response, labelling it as vacuous and a clear demonstration of her disregard for India's sovereignty.
He pointed out that Congress leaders like Jairam Ramesh had remained silent on the matter, suggesting that the party could not afford to let these allegations go unaddressed.
In his post, Jethmalani also referenced various corruption cases, including Bofors, Agusta, and National Herald, accusing the Gandhi family of evading the law for too long.
The row between the Congress and BJP over these issues has significantly heated up the political atmosphere in Parliament. The Congress, led by Rahul Gandhi, has made the Adani issue its main talking point for the current Parliament session.
Meanwhile, the BJP has used the opportunity to highlight what it claims are damaging links between the Congress party, Soros, and the push for Kashmiri separatism.
In an ongoing battle, Jethmalani also accused Congress of using the US indictment against Adani Group as a political tool to damage the reputation of the BJP.
The BJP has firmly denied any improper links between the party and the Adani Group. Meanwhile, the Adani Group itself has dismissed the charges from the US Department of Justice as baseless, with no substantial evidence to back the claims.
