A Jharkhand Jaguar (STF) jawan was martyred and a CoBRA jawan seriously injured in a fierce clash between security forces and Maoist insurgents in the heavily forested border area between the Chotanagra and Jaraikela police jurisdictions in the West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.
According to a press note from security authorities, the firefight occurred during an ongoing large-scale anti-Naxal operation being conducted in the rugged, forested terrain of the region.
The Maoists launched a calculated assault using firearms and a rocket launcher, aiming to inflict heavy casualties and disrupt the security forces’ advance.
In response, joint teams from the CoBRA 203 Battalion, Jharkhand Jaguar, and Jharkhand Police swiftly launched a counterattack, engaging the Maoists in a pitched battle. Despite their resistance, the insurgents managed to escape under the cover of dense jungle and challenging topography.
Two personnel sustained critical injuries in the blast from the Maoists’ rocket attack: Head Constable and Radio Operator Vishnu Saini from the CoBRA 203 Battalion, and Constable Sunil Dhan from the Jharkhand Jaguar unit.
Both injured officers were evacuated by helicopter to Ranchi for specialised medical care. Unfortunately, Constable Sunil Dhan succumbed to his injuries during treatment and was declared a martyr.
Head Constable Vishnu Saini is currently in stable condition, though he remains under close medical observation.
The entire security establishment, including Jharkhand Police and the participating units, paid heartfelt homage to Constable Dhan, honouring his ultimate sacrifice. His courage and unwavering dedication to duty are hailed as a lasting source of inspiration for fellow servicemen.
In a statement released by officials, they said, “We deeply honour the valour and sacrifice of Constable Sunil Dhan, who gave his life in service of the nation. His legacy will endure, and his sacrifice will not be forgotten.”
The encounter is part of a broader anti-Maoist campaign aimed at dismantling insurgent bases, severing their logistical support, and restoring lasting peace in areas affected by Naxal violence.
The drive has gained momentum in recent weeks, particularly in remote tribal regions like Kolhan and Saranda, long considered Maoist strongholds.
