Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), the ruling party in Jharkhand, has officially declared its backing for the INDIA bloc’s candidate in the upcoming Vice-Presidential election.
The announcement was made by the party’s General Secretary, Supriyo Bhattacharya, who said the JMM remains committed to safeguarding democratic principles and constitutional institutions.
“JMM has always worked to uphold democratic traditions. In line with this, the party has unanimously decided to support the INDIA bloc nominee, Justice (Retd.) B. Sudershan Reddy,” Bhattacharya stated.
The opposition alliance has fielded former Supreme Court judge Justice Reddy for the Vice-President’s post, while the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has nominated senior BJP leader and former Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan.

Justice (Retd.) Reddy filed his nomination in Parliament on Thursday, joined by top Congress leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
As a key constituent of Jharkhand’s ruling coalition, JMM’s support is expected to provide a boost to the opposition camp. Given its influence in the state’s political equations, analysts believe this move could significantly impact the broader electoral dynamics.
Meanwhile, the JMM also lodged a strong protest against the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill, calling it a direct attack on the democratic system. Describing the Bill as the “end of democracy”, Bhattacharya alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is misusing institutions such as the ED, CBI and the Election Commission to remain in power.
He said that after irregularities in the electoral process in many states, including Bihar, the BJP has now planned to put opposition leaders in jail and keep them in confinement for 30 days, so that their political journey can be brought to an end.
Bhattacharya claimed that out of the 240 Lok Sabha seats won by the BJP, about 100 seats had been “stolen”, and that the party’s actual public support rests on only 140 seats.
He alleged that the BJP is constantly adopting new strategies in an attempt to suppress and eliminate the opposition. Citing the government’s reply in Parliament, he said that so far 1,729 opposition leaders have been prosecuted by the ED and CBI, of whom only two have been convicted – both from Jharkhand.
Bhattacharya announced that in protest against this constitutional amendment, the JMM will burn effigies of the central government across the state and launch a phased mass movement.
