UGC NET Fallout: JNU Reevaluates PhD Entry Criteria.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is contemplating a return to conducting its own entrance examinations for PhD admissions following the cancellation of the UGC NET exam due to concerns over its integrity. Initially slated to rely on UGC NET scores for PhD admissions this academic session, JNU is now reconsidering its approach.

According to a statement from the JNU Teachers Association (JNUTA), Vice Chancellor Santishree D Pandit has decided to explore the possibility of reinstating JNU's previous practice of conducting in-house entrance exams for PhD admissions. This decision comes in response to demands raised after the cancellation of the June 2024 UGC-NET Examination.

A senior university official has confirmed that discussions are underway regarding this potential shift. Over the past year, both faculty members and students have voiced concerns regarding the National Testing Agency (NTA)-led examinations, highlighting various issues.

Previously, the NTA administered the entrance exam using a Computer Based Test format for several years. However, this year, JNU had announced its decision to accept National Eligibility Test (NET) scores instead of conducting its own entrance exam, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The cancellation of the UGC NET exam in June 2024, which is crucial for both entry-level teaching positions and PhD admissions across universities, was based on inputs from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) indicating potential compromises in exam integrity.

In response to recent developments, the JNUTA has welcomed the decisions taken during the meeting of the Vice Chancellor and Deans of Schools on July 3, 2024. They also expressed satisfaction with the decision to seek opinions from faculty members of Schools/Centres on this matter.

The ongoing discussions at JNU reflect a broader reassessment of the university's approach to PhD admissions amidst concerns over exam integrity and in alignment with evolving educational policies.
