In response to the alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) results, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on the matter, urging him to acknowledge the prevalence of corruption in the country.
The NEET-UG 2024 results, announced on June 4, sparked controversy due to various issues, including the awarding of grace marks to 1,500 students, a high number of perfect scores, and allegations of a leaked question paper. Multiple petitions were filed in the Supreme Court and high courts by students seeking a re-test, citing irregularities and discrepancies.
Speaking to a media agency from California, Sibal emphasised the need for the Prime Minister to address the issue in Parliament and admit to the existence of corruption across various sectors.
He recalled the Prime Minister's previous claims of eradicating corruption from ministries and highlighted the significance of acknowledging and addressing such issues. Sibal also criticised the Prime Minister's silence on other pressing matters, including the situation in Manipur and terrorism.
Asserting that the NEET issue falls under the purview of the Health Ministry rather than the HRD ministry, Sibal questioned the lack of response from the Health Minister. He expressed concerns about the integrity of the medical profession if students gain admission through means other than merit.
Several petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court seeking the recall of NEET-UG 2024 results and a fresh examination due to alleged paper leakage and malpractices during the test.
The NEET-UG exam, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is crucial for admission to medical and related courses in both government and private institutions nationwide.
In response to the petitions, the NTA informed the Supreme Court that the scorecards of 1,563 candidates who received grace marks would be cancelled, and they would have the opportunity to reappear for the exam on June 23. A committee has been formed to review the results of these candidates.
The Supreme Court is set to hear the petitions on July 8, addressing the concerns raised regarding the integrity and fairness of the NEET-UG examination process.
