Bibo Binanao showcases struggles of sisters in Bodoland at IFFI, Goa.

Kenny Basumatary's first Boro-language film, Bibo Binanao (My Three Sisters), recently made its mark at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. The film, produced by the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC), is a heartwarming dramedy set in rural Bodoland.

It narrates the story of four sisters navigating life’s challenges, including raising chickens, dealing with family losses, an abusive husband, and health issues.

The youngest sister, Mizi, is portrayed by Pansy Brahma, who stands as a pillar of strength for her elder siblings. The roles of the other three sisters are played by Sangeena Brahma, Helina Daimary, and Mithinga Narzary.

Filmmaker Kenny Basumatary expressed his delight in working with the cast, praising their preparation and performances, which allowed for seamless long takes. He mentioned that the actresses brought his vision to life with their stellar portrayals.

The film also features Rubul Boro, often recognized as a supervillain in Boro cinema. In Bibo Binanao, he takes on a rare gentlemanly role, a departure from his usual on-screen persona. Rubul is also known for his recent role in Local Kung Fu 3.

At IFFI, Kenny walked the red carpet alongside National Award-winning production designer Kulanandini Mahanta and NFDC’s executive producer Alex Leo Pou.

Kenny also made a second red carpet appearance as part of the team behind Swargarath, another film showcased in the festival's Panorama section.

Reflecting on the screening, Kenny shared his initial concerns about audience turnout for a Boro-language film. However, to his surprise, around 70 people attended the show and responded warmly, laughing at the intended moments and praising the film afterward.

Kenny expressed gratitude for their positive feedback, especially since Bibo Binanao isn’t a mainstream comedy.

For audiences in Assam, the film is set to premiere in the competition section of the Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival (BVFF) in Guwahati. While a theatrical release has not been planned yet, Kenny is hopeful that NFDC will send the film to other festivals, allowing it to reach a wider audience.
