Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse from Kerala, will be put to death in Yemen on July 16 after being found guilty of killing Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi in 2014. According to the sources the Yemeni president authorised her death sentence in 2023, and it is now set to go into effect.
In 2008, Priya relocated to Yemen in order to support her family in Kerala financially. Before starting her own medical clinic in 2014, she first worked in a number of hospitals. Foreigners operating such businesses are required by Yemeni law to collaborate with a local citizen. Priya and Talal Abdo Mahdi formed a business partnership in order to comply.
But the alliance quickly became antagonistic. Mahdi was temporarily arrested in 2016 after Priya allegedly lodged a police complaint against him. Her family claims that he was freed soon after and then started harassing and threatening her again.

Priya allegedly gave Mahdi sedatives in an attempt to get back her passport, which he had allegedly confiscated. Mahdi died as a result of the lethal dosage. In 2018, she was found guilty of premeditated murder after being detained while trying to escape Yemen.
Yemeni courts have upheld her sentence in spite of multiple clemency appeals and continuous diplomatic efforts by Indian authorities. Since there are no other legal alternatives, Priya's execution is now formally set for Tuesday, July 16.
