Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will visit Jammu & Kashmir for two days starting on August 21 of August, making crucial meetings in the run-up to the assembly polls, said Congress.
As per party sources, the visit was planned following Monday’s meeting with screening committees for the four poll-bound states.
"On 21st and 22nd August Congress President Shri Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi will be visiting Jammu and Srinagar for key meetings in preparation for the upcoming assembly elections," Congress General Secretary, Organisation, K C Venugopal posted on X.
Congress National General Secretary Gulam Ahmed Mir told reporters in Jammu on Tuesday that the two leaders were expected to arrive in the city on Wednesday afternoon.
They are expected to hold extensive meetings with leaders and workers in both Jammu and Srinagar to energise and strengthen the party cadre during their stay here.
They will come to Srinagar on Wednesday evening from Jammu and continue with their interactions. On Thursday, they are likely to address the press through their respective spokespersons.
After the meeting with reporters on Monday, Venugopal said preparations for elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra were discussed with guidelines set for selecting prospective candidates.
The newly-appointed Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief, Tariq Hameed Karra, said on Monday that the party is open to discussions with like-minded parties for a "respectable alliance" for the polls to the Assembly, mentioning that parameters for such a tie would be different from those of Lok Sabha elections.
The 90-member Jammu and Kashmir assembly will go to three-phase polls to be held on September 18, September 25 and October 1.
The panel also announced that polls will also be held for the 90-member Haryana assembly on October 1 and the results for all will be declared on 4 October.
