Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge launched a stinging critique of the BJP, urging them to take action to protect minorities in Bangladesh.
"Our brave leader Indira Gandhi divided Pakistan into two parts and liberated Bangladesh… The pride of this country spread across the world. The chaos that is going on there (in Bangladesh), at least these (BJP) people should open their eyes and try to save the minorities there,” he remarked.
Kharge also took aim at the BJP’s ideological wing, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), alleging that it had opposed the Constitution of India when it was adopted in 1949, claiming the Constitution was not based on the Manusmriti.
The scathing remarks came during a two-day special debate in the Rajya Sabha commemorating the 75th anniversary of the adoption of India’s Constitution.
The BJP, led by President and Union Minister JP Nadda, opened the debate. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to respond, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi will conclude the discussions on Tuesday.
The debate in the Rajya Sabha follows intense exchanges in the Lok Sabha, where several speakers from both the ruling and opposition parties voiced their views.
PM Modi’s speech in the lower house had focused on praising the framers of the Constitution, as well as the NDA government’s vision for strengthening it. The Prime Minister had also highlighted the significant role played by women in the Constituent Assembly.
In preparation for the debate, the BJP issued a three-line whip for all Rajya Sabha MPs, urging them to be present in the Upper House on December 16 and 17 during the Constitution debate.
