Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Thursday inaugurated a high-altitude irrigation canal in the Changthang region, constructed at an altitude of more than 14,000 feet, describing it as a major step towards strengthening water security in the remote area.

During his first visit to Changthang, Saxena also launched a plantation drive involving 15,000 trees along with local villagers to support soil conservation, slope stabilisation and ecological sustainability, officials said.

Speaking at the inauguration, the LG said the Mahey irrigation canal project would improve irrigation infrastructure, agricultural productivity and livelihoods in the region, where farming and allied activities largely depend on seasonal glacier melt and traditional water channels.

“The Mahey irrigation canal, along with the mass plantation drive, will immensely benefit the people of Changthang,” Saxena said.

Officials said the 2.10-km Mahey Tokpo-Raldho irrigation canal project was initiated in 2022-23. However, by March 2026, only 1,250 metres of construction had been completed and the project had stalled due to administrative issues.

After assuming office on March 13, Saxena reviewed the project and directed officials to expedite the remaining work. The final 850 metres of the canal were subsequently completed within two months.

The canal, built with a width and depth of two feet, draws water from Yaya Lake and is expected to provide irrigation support to nearly 100 acres of agricultural land in the Mahey area.

Officials said the project would significantly improve irrigation facilities in the high-altitude region, where erratic water supply and dependence on glacier melt have long affected farming activities.

Praising the Irrigation and Flood Control Department for executing the project in difficult mountainous terrain, Saxena said the canal had been constructed under challenging conditions with dedication and commitment.

The canal has been built nearly 200 feet above the road along steep mountainous terrain using PCC lining and breast wall works to ensure long-term stability and durability in extreme weather conditions.
