Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav has launched a sharp attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, calling him "mad" and demanding that he quit politics. The criticism follows Shah’s remarks on Dr BR Ambedkar during a Constitution debate in the Rajya Sabha, which have sparked controversy.
Lalu Yadav accused Amit Shah of harbouring hatred towards Dr Ambedkar, a revered figure in Indian politics and the architect of the Indian Constitution.
Speaking to reporters, Lalu stated that Shah’s comments were an insult to Ambedkar and called for his resignation. He emphasised that Ambedkar's contributions were unparalleled and deserved utmost respect.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had remarked during the parliamentary debate that it had become a “fashion” for Congress leaders to invoke Ambedkar’s name repeatedly. His statement was met with widespread criticism from opposition parties.
Former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, echoing his father’s sentiments, accused Shah and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of being anti-constitution and spreading hatred.
Tejashwi highlighted Ambedkar as a source of inspiration and warned against any attempts to disrespect his legacy.
The controversy escalated further when Congress MP Manickam Tagore moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, demanding an apology from Amit Shah.
Tagore accused the Home Minister of insulting Ambedkar within Parliament and called for his resignation from the cabinet. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also criticised Shah and joined the call for a public apology.
The Congress party, joined by several opposition leaders, staged protests in the Parliament premises. Holding pictures of Dr Ambedkar, they condemned Shah’s remarks and demanded accountability. Rahul Gandhi, along with other Congress leaders, actively participated in these demonstrations.
In his statement, Shah had taken a jibe at the Congress, suggesting that their frequent invocation of Ambedkar’s name had become excessive.
He remarked that if the Congress had taken God’s name as frequently as they did Ambedkar’s, they might have secured a place in heaven across lifetimes.
