Meanwhile, devotees from across the country thronged the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj for the final ‘Amrit Snan’ of the Maha Kumbh. The six sacred bathing days, which began on January 13 with Paush Purnima, culminated on February 26 with Maha Shivaratri.

The other bathing days included Makar Sankranti (January 14), Mauni Amavasya (January 29), Basant Panchami (February 3), and Maghi Purnima (February 12).

Maha Shivaratri, known as the ‘great night of Shiva,’ is observed with reverence across India, symbolising spiritual growth and the triumph over darkness.

It commemorates the divine wedding of Lord Shiva with Goddess Parvati, regarded as the ultimate embodiment of love and power.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva arrived at Goddess Parvati’s home on their wedding night with an extraordinary procession comprising Hindu gods, goddesses, animals, and demons.

The festival is marked by prayers, fasting, and night-long vigils at temples, with devotees offering milk, honey, and bel leaves to Lord Shiva.

In major pilgrimage centres like Varanasi, Haridwar, and Ujjain, the celebrations were held with great enthusiasm, drawing thousands of devotees.
